Introducing the Island of St. Maarten and St. Martin
A construction industry professional residing in Hanson, MA, Tim Farrell spends his free time reading, playing video games, and following professional sports. He also enjoys traveling. Over the years, Tim Farrell has visited several island countries, including St. Maarten.
Situated in the heart of the Caribbean Sea, St. Maarten is part of a divided island that also includes St. Martin to the north. The area was first colonized by the French and Dutch for its key location and natural deposits of salt. The Dutch and French agreed to divide the island in the mid-17th century, and the southern St. Maarten portion eventually came under the control of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
More recently, St. Maarten and St. Martin, which is under French control, have become two of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. Unfortunately, the tourism industry in the area took a big hit in 2017 when Hurricane Irma tore through the island. Although St. Maarten is still in the rebuilding process, many of the island's resorts, restaurants, and businesses have reopened their doors.
Today, both St. Maarten and St. Martin continue to offer travelers a European-influenced vibe along with a distinct island flair. In addition to the beautiful beaches, some of the top spots to visit in the area include downtown Philipsburg, Pinel Island, and St. Martin's Natural Reserve.
